2023 Fellow Focus: Alexa Simeone + Lele Art Lab
Mom, artivist, educator…2023 Fellow Alexa Simeone of Lele Art Lab shares more about her journey as a social impact entrepreneur.
What life experiences propelled you into the entrepreneurial space and made you decide to be your own boss?
My story is similar to immigrant families: community is everything and collaboration is key. I’ve lived in five different cities, held different roles in the creative field, and along the journey I’ve always felt connected towards creating impact at the grass roots level.
What do you enjoy most about being a founder?
I love sharing about the changing world with today’s youth and creating a space for curious kids who love to explore and make a difference in their community. I enjoy the freedom of being creative and coming up with solutions. I love the ongoing learning mindset that comes with being a founder. But most importantly, I enjoy the connection you build with other people in this space.
What do you wish someone had told you before you started your entrepreneurial journey?
I recently heard “you take two steps ahead and one step back.” I wished I would have learned this early on, rather than trying to iron out every detail and hold back. There is a flow to the journey and every step leads to progress.
Tell us about an experience you had as an entrepreneur or in starting your company that exemplified one of Camelback's core values: "Belief in Mission + Vision"; "Unafraid of Failure"; "Constant Learner"; "Humble + Hungry"; and "Give First."
[Belief in Mission + Vision] A mom once shared that her 6-year-old daughter “loved the class so much she played art teacher for her father.” Another student shared that her finished project became part of her youth group activities. Those early on moments reconnect me to the mission and what lives at the core.
How do you stay motivated?
Off screen, outdoors and tinkering in the garden. I love projects that involve paint, clay, collage, sculpture and mixed media. Working on these personal passion projects alongside my son, allow me to reflect and be thankful for my everyday blessings. These moments allow me to reset, be present and stay recharged.
Let's talk about your legacy. How do you hope your venture will make the world a better place generations from now?
To inspire the next generation of environmental scientists, blue planet artivists and ocean stewards. Energizing the community at the local level through discussions of climate change via the lens of culture and impactful art made by underserved youth communities.
What's your favorite book or podcast that you draw entrepreneurial inspiration from?
Favorite book: The Alchemist by Paul Coelho

The curves and sprints on this journey have all been met with great moments of insights. Having this community to go to feels like an extra special corner of the world made just for you. The Camelback journey has been even more inspiring than I could have ever imagined.
