Antoinette Banks

Expert IEP

LinkedIn

Antoinette Banks is the Founder and CEO of Expert IEP, an AI-powered platform that helps families decode special education plans and advocate with clarity and confidence.

She’s also a cognitive scientist and PhD candidate at UC Davis, where her research uses large language models to analyze how language in IEPs shapes access, power, and family engagement. Her original framework—Family Mattering—uncovers how documentation practices in special education either center or silence families, particularly those from historically underserved communities.

Antoinette’s journey began as a single mother navigating the special education system after her daughter was diagnosed with autism and ADHD. She became an advocate, legal researcher, and system translator—because she had to. That path led her to write Better Than a Diagnosis: A Single Parent’s Guide to Autism, and to build the tech-enabled platform now used by over 1,200 families across the country.

Expert IEP has helped 87% of families secure new or expanded services and see gains in reading, math, or access to support. The work has been recognized with over $1.5 million in mission-aligned funding from organizations like Black Ambition, NewSchools Venture Fund, Camelback Ventures, and the Yass Prize.

Antoinette has spoken at the United Nations on equitable AI deployment, advised the former Office of the First Lady, and been featured in Forbes, Essence, and Fast Company. She’s a Halcyon and Camelback Fellow, and was recently named one of the top women leading innovation in AI and education.

She is currently leading a national crowdfunding campaign to expand Expert IEP’s reach to 1,000 more families—because every child deserves more than the bare minimum, and no family should have to decode the system alone.
